Mayor Willie Herenton
Inducted On:

Why the Shame:

In 1991, something happened that had never happened in the city of Memphis; Black people came together.  After the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968, the Memphis Black community was divided for many years.  But in 1991, a group of concerned leaders came together and put what is now called "The People's Convention".  The sole purpose of this convention was to elect a concensus black candidate to run for the highest office in city government-the office of Mayor.  The majority of blacks in the convention voted to elect Dr. Willie W. Herenton as the concensus candidate for the black community.  The election was held and Dr. Herenton became the first black mayor elected in the city of Memphis.  Now here is the sad part.  Mayor Herenton was given a 12-point agenda to empower the black community; however, Dr. Herenton never recognized the 12-point agenda given to him by the majority of black citizens who put him in office.  Until this day, Dr. Herenton has failed to improve the way of life of those who put him in office.  This is why Dr. Herenton, the mayor of the city of Memphis, should be inducted into the hall of shame now and forever for the world to know.
